My FIL insisted the book version of The Godfather is 'just business', not a crime story

He spent 20 minutes at Thanksgiving dinner arguing that the novel makes Vito Corleone a sympathetic CEO, which felt like he was totally missing the point about power and corruption. Has anyone else dealt with a relative who tries to sanitize a dark story just because they read the book first?

and honestly the only way I've gotten through to people like that is to just ask them point blank "so if someone offered you a million dollars to kill a guy who was going to hurt your family, you'd do it no questions asked?" usually shuts them up pretty quick when they realize they're defending literal murder as corporate strategy
