The audiobook vs. the physical copy of The Shining, total game changer

I read The Shining in print back in 2018 and thought it was fine, but last month I tried the audiobook narrated by Campbell Scott on a 6 hour drive to Portland. Hearing Jack's slow spiral in real time with headphones made the hotel feel way creepier than any page turn ever did. The print version wins for detail, but audio wins for pure dread. Anyone else find a book that only works in one format for them?
