Tried to explain the 'Dune' movie changes to my book club. Took 45 minutes.

We read the book first, then watched the new film. I liked the visuals but the movie cut so much from the book's inner thoughts. Spent forever trying to explain why the dinner scene matters. Everyone just wanted to argue about the sandworms. Has anyone else had a group just not get the adaptation choices?

Yeah, that's the whole problem. The movie looks cool but you lose all the internal stuff. My friends just argued about the sandworm size.

Sandworm size, the real deep cut (sigh).

Right, and the whole point of the sandworms is how they tie into the water economy. The movie shows them as big monsters, but the book makes them part of the ecosystem. They make the spice by reacting to water in a certain way. So their size isn't just for looks, it's a clue about the planet's whole setup.
