Used to hate movie versions of my favorite books, then I saw The Godfather

I used to be one of those people who refused to watch any adaptation because the book was always better. After a buddy kept pushing me to see The Godfather I finally caved last year. The movie captured the tone and characters way better than I expected, even cutting out a whole subplot about Sonny's, uh, physical attributes. Has anyone else had a book adaptation that actually improved on the source material?
