Watched the new 'Dune' movie before reading the book and it messed up my head

I was so excited for the new 'Dune' movie that I went to see it opening night. I figured I'd watch the film first, then dive into Frank Herbert's book. Big mistake. The movie's amazing visuals and sounds filled my head with specific images for all the characters and places. When I finally started reading a week later, I couldn't picture anything but the actors' faces and the movie's sets. It totally killed my own imagination. I missed out on building the world in my mind the way the author might have wanted. Now I feel like I ruined the book for myself. Has anyone else done this with a big adaptation and regretted it? What's your rule for book versus movie order now?

Always read the book first now.

Used to be a big movie first person, figured it was easier. Then I watched an adaptation of my favorite book and they cut out half the story. Ruined it for me. Now I always grab the book to get the full picture in my head before a studio changes it. The book is almost always richer.

Funny enough I actually go the OTHER way now. Books can get SO bogged down in descriptions that go on forever. Like, do I really need three pages about what a castle looks like? A movie HAS to keep things moving or people walk out. I've had books completely KILL my interest in a story because the author wouldn't stop explaining things. Sometimes the movie fixes all the boring parts.
