Watching the show first ruined the book for me, and I'm honestly shocked
I finally got around to reading The Expanse after watching all 6 seasons over the last year or so. I figured I'd enjoy the books even more since everyone says they're richer. But I kept getting bored because I already knew every twist. The reveal about the protomolecule, the weird stuff on Ilus, all of it landed flat. It felt like rereading spoilers instead of discovering a story. I think going book first is the only way for me now. Has anyone else hit this where the show killed their enjoyment of the source material? Or am I just weird for needing the surprise?

Oh man, I totally get this... and honestly it's flipped my whole view on adaptations. I used to be the person who'd say "who cares if you watch the show first, the book is always worth it." But you're right, the mystery is what makes those books tick. Like the whole reveal about what the protomolecule actually is, it's this slow burn that pays off so hard on the page. Watching the show first just takes that fire out of it. I did the same thing with Game of Thrones and the books were a slog because I knew exactly where every thread was going. It's not weird at all, you're just someone who likes the discovery part of storytelling.
