A ranger at GSMNP said my bear hang was too low, and I've been rethinking my whole setup
Went camping in the Smokies two weekends ago and a backcountry ranger stopped by my site. He looked at my bear hang and just said 'that's at 8 feet, needs to be 12.' I'd been hanging at 8 for probably 5 trips and never had a problem, so I figured it was fine. He explained that black bears in that area have learned to reach that low. I moved it higher the next night and slept way better. Now I'm wondering if I should just switch to a canister. What's everyone using these days?
Honestly 8 feet seems fine to me, plenty of people I know hang at that height and never lose a thing. Sounds like that ranger was just trying to scare you into buying a canister.
