Finally got to try out that new tent at Red Rock Canyon last weekend

I drove out to Red Rock Canyon in Nevada last Saturday to test my new 3 person tent I've been meaning to review. The wind picked up around 4 PM and I was worried the cheap stakes would fold, but it held steady through gusts that must have been over 20 mph. I was honestly surprised because it's a budget model under $120 and usually those have flimsy poles. The vestibule space was big enough to keep my muddy boots and backpack dry overnight. Has anyone else had good luck with lower cost tents in high wind conditions?

My buddy took a cheap Ozark Trail dome tent out to the Gila National Forest last spring. A sudden hailstorm rolled in with wind that knocked down everyone's canopy tents, but his little 80 dollar special just bent over and popped back up. He said the rainfly leaked a bit at the seams, but the poles never snapped and the stakes held even though we were on gravel.

and honestly the ground you pitch on makes a bigger difference than the tent price half the time. @jennyh55 mentioning gravel stakes staying put is wild cause on sand or loose dirt even expensive stakes will pull out. i learned that the hard way at Great Sand Dunes when my 200 dollar tent went flying at 2am. the trick is to bury the stakes at an angle or tie off to big rocks if you can find them. the ozark trail tents have gotten way better in the last few years too the poles used to snap if you looked at them wrong.
