Had a talk with a park ranger in Colorado that made me rethink my whole tent setup

He told me my 3-season tent was basically a death trap above treeline in a summer storm and showed me the damage on someone else's poles from a similar model, so has anyone here actually tested their gear in genuinely bad weather or do we all just hope for the best?

My buddy's MSR tent snapped a pole in a Wyoming hailstorm last July, totally collapsed on him at 2am. I took that as my sign to finally set my tent up in the backyard with a garden hose on full blast for an hour, just to see what would happen. Trust me, it's way better finding out a seam leaks there than on a mountain at midnight, soaked and freezing. Most people just buy gear and hope, but bad weather will find you eventually, it's a real gamble.

I read that most folks just pray their tent holds up instead of testing it.
