I used a $12 foam pad from a garage sale for 2 seasons and it beat my $90 one
I picked up this no name blue foam pad at a garage sale in Boise for 12 bucks about two years ago, mostly as a backup for when my kid borrows my good gear. I figured it would be junk, but I tossed it in the truck for a quick overnight near Stanley last June and slept better than I had in months. My main pad is a self inflating one that cost closer to 90 dollars, and it always slides around on my tent floor and leaves my hip sore by 4am. The cheap foam one does not slide at all, and when I folded it double it felt warmer than the fancy one on a night that hit about 38 degrees. I did notice the foam soaks up a little damp if you leave it out, so now I let it air out on the porch rail after each trip. The only real downside is pack size, it takes up a ton of room in my pack, so it mostly lives strapped to the outside. Has anyone else gone back to the old school closed cell pads after years on inflatables, and did you find a trick to keep them from getting so bulky?
