I think taking gear tips from casual campers is a mistake. My neighbor pushed his favorite jacket on me for a weekend trip. It poured rain and the thing leaked like a sieve after an hour. We had to hike back cold and wet, which cut the trip short. He was just sharing what worked for him once, but gear wears out. Now I look at lots of user reviews online before trusting any recommendation. One person's good experience does not mean it will work for you.

Yeah, a leaky jacket is no joke. Casey_fox has a solid point. I got caught in a cold drizzle once and my so-called waterproof shell just gave up, got soaked right through. Makes you realize how fast a fun hike can turn miserable when your gear fails.
