Overheard a guy at REI say a tarp is better than a tent for solo trips

I was standing in the rain gear aisle last Saturday and this older dude tells his friend he's been using just a tarp for 10 years. He said it weighs under a pound and he's never woken up wet. It made me think about all the heavy tent gear I lug around for just me. Has anyone else tried switching to a tarp setup?

Wait, UNDER A POUND? That's insane. I saw a guy's tarp setup once and it looked like a disaster waiting to happen.
