Overheard a guy at the REI in Boulder say he never stakes down his new Big Agnes tent
He was bragging about how the freestanding design meant he could skip it, even in wind. That's a fast way to wreck a $400 shelter. I've seen a Copper Spur HV UL2 take flight in a gust because someone thought the same thing. What's the dumbest shortcut you've heard someone take with good gear?

My own dumbest shortcut was trying to use a single trekking pole as a center support for my old tent. It was in the Winds, a gust came through, and the whole thing folded in on me like a bad joke. I spent the next hour untangling myself from wet nylon.

Folded in on me like a bad joke" is the perfect way to describe it. Read a story once where a guy used a ski pole for the same thing with the same soggy result.

Sounds like the tent decided to take a nap with you inside, lol.
