Overheard a ranger say most tent stakes are pointless in rocky soil
I was packing up at Joshua Tree last weekend when a ranger told me he sees people snap their cheap aluminum stakes on the first try and end up tying guy lines to rocks, so I grabbed a set of those spiral steel ones for 12 bucks and they held through 30 mph gusts all night, has anyone else switched after a similar tip?

That happened to me in Moab last spring, bent three cheap stakes before I gave up and started stacking rocks, the spiral ones are the only ones I carry now. Best twelve bucks I ever spent.
