Rant: the rain fly on my 2019 REI Half Dome died at 2am in Shenandoah and I finished the trip in a trash bag poncho
Three straight days of rain on that trip soaked through every seam, my sleeping bag weighed about ten pounds, and my buddy kept saying "at least the stars will come out tomorrow" right up until the tent turned into a swimming pool, so now I want to know if anyone else has a tent that gave out way too early or if I just got a lemon.
Man, reading this brought back some bad memories. Used to be one of those guys who said you could fix any tent with a little seam sealer and some patience, and that people who complained about gear were just rough on their stuff. Then my old Marmot started leaking right through the floor on a wet weekend in the Smokies, and no amount of sealer saved it. Turns out coated fabrics just break down after a few years, no matter how nice you treat them, and the factory waterproofing on a lot of tents is way thinner than people want to believe. So no, you probably didn't get a lemon, you just hit the point where the coating gave up, and three days of steady rain will find every weak spot at once.
