Showerthought: I used to think a cheap tent was fine until a storm in the Adirondacks

For years I just grabbed whatever $50 tent was on sale, figuring they were all basically the same. Last August, a surprise thunderstorm on a ridge near Lake Placid turned my old dome into a flapping, leaking mess by 2 AM. I finally upgraded to a Marmot Tungsten 3P, and the difference in build quality and weather sealing is night and day. Has anyone else had a specific trip that finally convinced you to invest in better shelter?

Oh man, a windy night in Wyoming convinced me.

That sounds brutal. What was the breaking point in Wyoming? Like, was it the noise keeping you up, or did something actually start to rip?

Stuck a weather station on the roof and ran the numbers. Realized the house was built like a kite and started sealing every damn crack I could find.
