Showerthought: people review tents after one dry weekend and call them waterproof
I keep seeing reviews where someone sets up a tent in their yard, gets one light drizzle, and declares it fully waterproof. That is not a test, that is a first date. Real rain comes sideways for 6 hours and finds every weak seam and zipper flap you own. I know because my $180 tent did great in a June sprinkle in Asheville, then let a puddle into my sleeping bag during a storm at Grayson Highlands in September. So now when I read a review, I skip the stars and look for the words "second trip" or "rained all night" before I trust a single line. Does anyone else have a rain story where the gear passed the drizzle and failed the downpour?
Man, a light drizzle in the yard doesn't even count as a test. Hydrostatic head ratings are measured under lab pressure, but a seam can hold up fine in a sprinkle and still wick water right through once rain sits on it for hours. My old REI Passage was the same deal, bone dry on a weekend trip to Shenandoah, then soaked through the floor on night two of a three day trip in Pisgah when the rain just never stopped. You're right to hunt for the "rained all night" reviews, those are the only ones worth reading lol.
