I read that flood damage is actually way more common in July than people think, especially around Lake George with all the summer storms. Getting a waterproof groundsheet was the best $20 I ever spent after my own soggy tent disaster.

Did you put it under the tent or inside? My buddy had his tent floor turn into a wading pool last June because he skipped the groundsheet and picked a low spot. His sleeping bag was toast, had to sleep in the car that night.
