That guy at REI told me to get a $20 foam pad instead of an inflatable...
He swore by it for three seasons in the Sierras, so I carried that stupid CCF roll for 2 nights in Yosemite and woke up with my hip bone grinding into granite. Has anyone else had a foam pad actually work for side sleeping?

Isn't it funny how we let one loud opinion override our own common sense? I've noticed this same pattern everywhere, not just in camping gear. My neighbor insisted I needed an expensive espresso machine to make good coffee, so I bought one, and honestly my old French press worked better. People get so attached to what works for their specific body and habits that they think it's universal truth. That REI guy probably sleeps on his back like a log and has never felt what it's like to have a hip socket dig into frozen ground at 2 AM. I finally gave up and bought a thick inflatable pad, and my back is much happier for it. Sometimes you just have to trust your own bones over someone else's story.

Wait, your neighbor convinced you to buy a whole espresso machine and then you went back to the French press? That's wild. I mean, I get it, I've been there too. I let a guy at a climbing gym talk me into buying these super aggressive shoes that hurt so bad I could barely stand in them, let alone climb. But a whole espresso machine? That's next level. You're totally right though, we just listen to the loudest voice sometimes even when our own body is screaming at us.
