Update: That relentless coastal storm convinced me simple tarps beat complex tents

My expensive freestanding shelter nearly collapsed in the wind, but a basic rigged tarp held firm and stayed quiet all night. I think we prioritize convenience over reliability when choosing shelter for rough weather. What's your take on minimalist setups versus engineered solutions for unpredictable conditions?

Your 'unpredictable conditions' point misses the tarp's real edge: improvisation (and silent pride).

Ever notice how a screaming tent sounds exactly like your camping ego leaving your body? Spent a fortune on something that howled all night like a haunted banshee, while the hardware store special just did its job. Really puts your trust in clever marketing to the test. The tarp wins just by being boring.

Nothing like watching a three-hundred dollar nylon palace (complete with fancy airflow engineering and color-coded poles) try to become a kite while a twenty-dollar blue tarp from the hardware store just sits there, smug and silent. All those clever tensioners and aerodynamic profiles, and the thing still sounded like a flag in a hurricane (my sleeping bag was basically a panic room). Sometimes the best engineering is just a few grommets and the good sense to hide behind a big rock.
