An old-timer in St. Louis showed me a trick for seaming

I was just starting out and struggling with a stretch-in on a big living room in St. Louis. An older installer named Hank came over from another room and watched me for a minute. He said, "You're fighting the kicker instead of letting it work for you." He showed me how to angle my knee just right to get better stretch without the extra effort. Has anyone else had a seasoned pro give them a tip that changed how they work?

Hank's knee angle advice reminds me of a trick a guy named Mike taught me in a warehouse in Chicago. He said to put your non-kicking foot right on the seam and push down hard with your heel while you stretch. It locks the carpet in place and lets you get that extra inch or two without fighting the kicker. I still do that on every seam, especially on those cheap jute-backed carpets that want to walk around on you. Little adjustments like that save your back and make the job a lot smoother.

Honestly @daniel214 that foot-on-the-seam trick is solid advice. Ngl I've seen way too many guys fight the kicker on loose carpet and end up with crooked seams. Tbh the heel pressure makes all the difference because it stops the carpet from sliding back on you. I've used that exact move on jute backs and it saves your knees from taking all that extra abuse. Little tricks like that are what separate a clean job from a headache.
