Had to pick between a full tear-out or a patch on a big pet stain in a Phoenix living room

The stain was about 3 feet wide and the homeowner wanted it gone. I could either cut out the bad section and seam in a new piece from the leftover carpet, or pull up the whole room and start fresh. I went with the patch job to save them money and time, but matching the 15-year-old carpet pile was a real pain. Anyone have a better method for blending old carpet when the original is long gone?

Matching old carpet is the worst part of a patch job... honestly, you did the right thing trying to save them the cost. For blending, try taking the donor piece from a closet or under a couch where the pile is less worn. Sometimes you can "lift" the nap on the old carpet around the seam with a stiff brush to help it blend better. A good carpet tech can work magic with a seam roller and a little extra adhesive to hide that line.

People cheap out on materials then wonder why the fix looks bad.

My buddy tried patching a sun-faded section and it looked like a checkerboard. He ended up having to brush some fabric dye on the new piece to dull the color a bit. Still wasn't perfect but it helped.
