Observing the trend in carpet underlay specifications
Early in my career, underlay was thick and springy. Today, it's often thin and firm for supposed better support. This might help with durability, but I miss the cushioned installs. Homeowners don't always notice the difference until they compare.

You feel the difference when you walk on it, right?

Totally, @xena873. What works for me is walking on it barefoot to really notice the change. That's when you can't ignore the difference in support.

My old carpet felt fine until I tried the new one without shoes. The padding underneath makes a huge difference, like walking on a firm cloud. I actually measured the old one and it had compressed nearly half an inch in the high traffic spots. That's why the new support is so obvious, your feet aren't sinking down anymore. It's a total game changer for how my knees feel at the end of the day.
