PSA: The way I was stretching carpet was completely backwards for years
I used to stretch carpet from the middle of the room out to the walls. I thought that made sense because you work from the center and spread outward. Then I did a big living room job in Austin about 6 months back and the homeowner watched me for 20 minutes. He used to install carpet back in the 80s and he asked why I was making more work for myself. He showed me that you should start at the longest wall first, stretch to the opposite wall, and then do the sides. I felt like an idiot because all that extra pulling in the middle was creating ripples I had to fight later. Now my seams line up better and I spend maybe 30 minutes less per room. Has anyone else had a similar moment where you realized you were doing a basic step totally wrong?

actually i gotta push back on this a little. starting from the longest wall makes sense on paper but in practice i've had it backfire on me in rooms that aren't perfectly square. if you stretch from one long wall to the other first and the wall is slightly bowed, you lock in that crooked line and then your sides get all wonky. i do better stretching from the center out because i can adjust the tension as i go and even out any weird wall angles before i lock into the hook strip.

Wait, hold on. "I've had it backfire on me in rooms that aren't perfectly square" - what? I mean, that is wild to me. I guess I've been lucky because I've never had a wall so bowed that it messed with the whole room that bad. But seriously, if the wall is that crooked, maybe the house has bigger problems than the carpet, right? Idk, maybe it's just me, but I would think you can still start from the long wall and just adjust the tension in the stretch tool as you go to match the curve. I feel like starting from the center is just asking for those ripples to show up later in the middle of the room, which is the worst spot you can have them.
