Spent 4 hours on a single stair tread yesterday because the old adhesive was like tar
The homeowner said the previous carpet was only down for 5 years, but that glue was set like rock. Had to scrape every bit off with a heat gun and a 4-inch putty knife. Anyone got a better method for that kind of mess?

Oh man, a grinder is the nuclear option... That dust gets in everything and you're finding it for months. A floor scraper with a long handle and replaceable blades is way less messy for that kind of job.
