That one weird corner that ate up my whole afternoon

Had a job in a 100 year old house where the hallway met a stair landing at a 45 degree angle, but the subfloor was all out of whack. I figured it was a two hour fix, tops. Ended up spending almost five hours just on that one spot, cutting and recutting the pad and carpet to get it to lay flat without a bubble. The homeowner's old dog just sat there watching me the whole time, which did NOT help. Anyone else ever get stuck on a weird geometry problem that just would not quit?

Reminds me of a friend who spent a whole day trying to hang a single cabinet on a slanted kitchen wall. Sometimes the house just wins, you know?

Ever think that dog was just enjoying the show? Sometimes you just have to make the top layer work with what's under it.

Oh man, that's the worst. I gotta say though, if the subfloor was that bad, the pad and carpet were never going to lay right until you fixed the wood underneath first. You have to shim it up level or you're just fighting it forever. That old dog was probably judging your whole process.
