Went to a foreclosure auction in Boise and the guy next to me bid using his mom's credit card

Last week at the Ada County courthouse steps, this college kid outbid me on a duplex by $500 and then pulled out a sparkly Lilac card to pay the deposit. The auctioneer just shrugged and ran it, and the kid told me his mom set the max limit at $80k but he figured she would be cool with a little more. Has anyone else seen a cash deal get done with plastic and a prayer, or is Boise just a different breed?

Did the auctioneer even check the card's signature?

Honestly that card probably went through faster than a wire transfer would have, and the auction house got paid either way. Mom's the one who's gonna have to deal with the fallout, not the bank or the county, so why would anyone stop and do extra checks?
