Debate: Are old school metal Tonka trucks better than the new plastic ones?

I found my 1985 Tonka dump truck at my parents' place last weekend and it still works after I hit it with a hammer as a kid. But my nephew got a new plastic one and it cracked on the first drop. My question is: does durability really matter for toys if kids just lose interest in 2 weeks anyway?

Hit the nail on the head about kids losing interest. My niece went through three different dump trucks in one summer because the plastic ones kept breaking and she'd want a new one anyway. But there's something different about the old metal ones that goes beyond durability. They had weight to them, you know? Like when you picked one up it felt like a real tool, not a toy. And yeah maybe she'd get bored of it too, but that thing would still be sitting in the garage waiting for the next kid to come along and actually use it for real work. The plastic ones just end up in a landfill after a couple months.

Slap some tractor tire shine on those old metal ones and they'll outlast the kids for sure.
