Debate: Did anyone else play with LEGOs completely wrong as a kid?

I grew up always building those LEGO sets EXACTLY by the instructions. Follow every step, use every piece. Then last month my nephew dumped a bucket of random bricks on the floor and built some weird spaceship that actually looked cool. It made me wonder if I totally missed the point of LEGOs by being too strict. What side are you on - instructions all the way or just freebuild and see what happens?

Built instructions for 20 years and still made it look wrong.

Instructions are there for a reason, you get the actual intended design.
