Overheard my kid say Legos are boring now and it got me thinking

I was cleaning out the garage last weekend and heard my 12 year old tell his friend that Legos are boring. It made me pull out my old bin of bricks from the 90s. I sat down and built a spaceship just like I used to, and honestly I had more fun than I do with most video games now. The sets are way more complicated these days with all the specialty pieces. My nephew has a $150 Star Wars set that takes one build and sits on a shelf. I remember spending hours making random stuff with just basic bricks. Has anyone else noticed the magic is in the simple play, not the fancy kits?

You know, I actually had the same thing happen with my son a few years back. He was 11 and said the same thing, so I pulled out my old bucket of bricks from the 80s and we built a city together over a weekend. The secret is to hide the instructions and just let them go wild with the basic blocks. Even my nephew who's glued to his tablet now asks to play with the plain bricks when he comes over. Once they realize there's no right or wrong way to build, the creativity kicks back in.
