Showerthought: I played with LEGOs wrong for like 15 years

Growing up I always followed the instructions step by step, building exactly what was on the box every single time. Then last year my friend's kid just dumped a giant bin on the floor and started making a spaceship out of random pieces from five different sets, and I realized I never actually let myself be creative with them. Did anyone else get stuck in the instruction mindset or was I just a weird kid lol?

Growing up I always followed the instructions step by step, building exactly what was on the box" - that's not really playing wrong, that's just how most of us started. The real wrong way is probably not even playing with them at all, like my cousin who kept all his sets in sealed boxes. But I think a lot of us got stuck in that instruction rut because the sets got so specific. I had a Star Wars X-wing set that had like 700 pieces, and if I mixed that with random bricks, I'd lose track of what made it look like an X-wing.

You said you'd "lose track of what made it look like an X-wing" if you mixed the pieces up, but isn't that kind of the point? lol Like, once you break down the set's identity, you're free to build whatever weird spaceship you want. Did you ever try just tearing it apart and making something totally random, or was it too stressful to lose that specific look?
