The $3 garage sale Brio knockoff beat my expensive set

Spent 80 bucks on a fancy wooden train set for my kid last Christmas and it kept derailing on every curve, then I grabbed a cheap bin of random track pieces for 3 bucks at a yard sale in Akron and it runs smoother than anything. Has anyone else found that mismatched old toys sometimes work better than the shiny new versions, or did I just luck into a weird manufacturing quirk?
