Warning: my old Hot Wheels track is a trip hazard for my kid, not just nostalgia

My neighbor Diane stopped me at the park last Saturday and pointed out that the orange loops we played with in the 90s have cracks in the plastic now, stuff I never noticed as a kid. She said her nephew took a faceplant off a jump last month because a joint gave way mid-race, needed two stitches at urgent care in Akron. Has anyone else checked their vintage track pieces for wear before letting little ones run cars on them, or am I overthinking this?

Whoa, wait, nobody's talking about the sunlight angle here. That orange plastic from the 90s got hammered by UV rays for thirty years in attics and garages, which makes it way more brittle than the fresh stuff you'd buy today. I literally found a piece where the connector tabs had turned chalky white and snapped off with just finger pressure, no kid even touching it. So yeah, you're not overthinking it, but it's not just the joints you can see, it's the plastic that looks fine until it's flexed at the wrong moment. Might be worth giving the whole track a bend test before you let the little ones near it, especially the old light-up pieces with the exposed wires.
