Bought a $300 indoor compost bin and it's just a bug hotel now

I got one of those fancy electric composting machines off Amazon six months ago. Worked great for like two weeks then started smelling like a dumpster. Spent another $50 on filters and tried drying out the scraps more but now it's just full of fruit flies and ants. Has anyone actually gotten these things to work long term or am I better off just doing regular outdoor composting?

Hey, did you ever try just burying the scraps in a bucket of soil instead? I had a similar issue with my first electric composter and switched to a simple $20 bucket with a lid from the hardware store. I layer in soil and food scraps, mix it every few days, and it stays totally bug free and odorless... plus it gives me great dirt for my garden. The electric ones are too finicky with moisture levels, I think they work best if you're super disciplined about drying everything out first.

300 bucks for a bug hotel seems kinda like you got what you paid for, honestly. I mean, is a few fruit flies really that big of a deal or are we just overthinking this whole thing?
