Compost tumbler vs. pile, the tumbler won after 6 weeks in Phoenix heat

I ran a kitchen compost bin for years but the smell got bad in summer. Switched to a $90 tumbler on a stand, turned it 3 times a week. Pile got dry and slow, tumbler cooked through in half the time. My neighbor still uses a pile and I don't get it. Anyone else see a big difference with tumblers in hot climates?
