Had to pick between a heat pump water heater and a tankless gas one for my basement
My old 50-gallon electric unit died last week in Portland, and I was stuck deciding between a Rheem heat pump model or a Navien tankless gas. I went with the heat pump because my basement stays around 55 degrees and I heard it could save me like $300 a year on electricity. So far it's been fine, but the recovery time is slower than I expected on cold mornings. Anyone else make this switch and regret it or love it?

Read somewhere that heat pumps pull moisture out of the air, so you might need to drain it more often in a damp basement.

You know what, I feel you on the slower recovery. I swapped out a dying electric unit for a heat pump in my own basement last fall, and those cold mornings are a bit of a shock. It's like it's efficient but it takes its sweet time warming back up after a shower. I just learned to stagger my hot water use, like do dishes before anyone else gets in, but it's not perfect.
