I finally saw a city block go car-free for a day
It was at the Main Street festival in Portland last month, and they closed off five blocks to traffic. Seeing kids playing in the street where cars usually are made me push our neighborhood association to plan a monthly 'open street' event. What's a good first step for getting local businesses on board with something like that?

Start by showing them how it brings more foot traffic.

Exactly! Foot traffic is the easiest sell because small business owners can see it with their own eyes. Show them photos of the crowd from a similar event and mention how many people walked past their store that day. A simple before and after comparison of foot traffic numbers makes the point way stronger than just talking about it.

Can you get some data from that Portland event like @elizabeth_bailey26 said? I tried to sell my neighbors on a bake sale once with just vibes, and it did not go well.
