I picked a heat pump over a new gas furnace and my bill dropped 40 bucks a month

This winter, my old furnace gave out and I had to choose: a new, high-efficiency gas unit or an electric heat pump. The gas guy said it was a 'no-brainer' and cheaper to run, but I looked at the numbers. With the federal tax credit and a local rebate from Portland, the heat pump cost about the same upfront. I went for it, even though my dad called it a 'glorified AC unit.' It's been six months now. My January electric bill was high, sure, but my gas bill is basically zero. Overall, I'm saving around $40 a month. The house stays a steady temp and it's quieter. Has anyone else made this switch in a colder climate and how did your math work out?

Glorified AC unit" is what my uncle said too, but your numbers make me rethink that.

What numbers are we talking about here? I saw a report last week that broke down the energy savings over a full year, not just the summer. It was pretty convincing. Margaretj40, that might be the same data you're asking about. It showed how much less strain it puts on the whole house system. My uncle called it a fancy fan too, but the right numbers can really change the story.
