I thought those curbside compost pickup flyers were a scam, then I actually tried it
Got a flyer on my door back in March about a new curbside compost service in my part of Columbus, $9 a month, they take food scraps and yard stuff. I laughed and tossed it, figured it was some guy with a truck who would just dump it in a ditch somewhere. My neighbor Barb signed up and kept bugging me about it for like two months straight. Finally I tried it in June and turns out the city actually runs it through the same yard waste site, and they post the tonnage numbers online every month. I did the math on my own bin one time and I was throwing out about 4 pounds of food scraps a week that could have gone in there instead of the trash. Six months in and my kitchen trash bag lasts almost twice as long, which honestly saves me money on bags. Still not sure what happens to the finished compost though, does anyone know if they actually give it back to residents or sell it?
