My attempt to compost in my apartment with a $40 worm bin went way better than I thought...

After 6 months, my little bin in Phoenix processes about 2 pounds of kitchen scraps a week, and I was shocked at how simple it actually is once you get past the initial 'ick' factor... has anyone else tried vermicomposting in a small space?

Honestly, I just don't get the point of keeping a box of worms in your kitchen. It's cool that it works, but is saving a couple pounds of scraps from the trash each week really that big of a deal? Seems like a lot of hassle for very little actual impact. I'd rather just take my compost out to the green bin if my building has one.

Wait, you have a green bin at your building? That's the real shocker here. Most of us are stuck with regular trash only. For a lot of people, a worm bin is the only way to keep food scraps out of a landfill. It's not about a couple pounds, it's about doing something when the system gives you no other option.
