My neighbor told me to stop bagging my leaves and just mow them into the lawn

He said it would help the grass and keep stuff out of the landfill. I thought it would look messy, but I tried it last fall on my backyard in Cincinnati. The grass came back way thicker this spring, and I didn't have to buy any extra fertilizer. It saved me a bunch of plastic bags and a trip to the yard waste drop-off. Has anyone else tried this and noticed a difference in their soil after a few seasons?

Cincinnati has some heavy clay soil in spots. I'm surprised the mower could chop those wet oak leaves fine enough to break down. That result after just one winter is pretty convincing.

How wet were the leaves when you mowed them? I tried this a couple years ago but my maple leaves were soggy and just got clumped up. Maybe I need to catch them on a drier day or go over them twice. Your results are making me want to give it another shot.

Hey, maybe the leaves just weren't dry enough to begin with.
