My town's new curbside compost program lost 40 tons of food scraps in one month, is this normal for a rollout?
Our city launched curbside compost pickup back in March and I signed up on day one. Last month the program director admitted at a council meeting that about 40 tons of collected scraps got sent to the landfill anyway because the processing site out in Fairview couldn't keep up. Half the people at the meeting said that's just growing pains and we should give it a full year before judging it. The other half said the city promised us real diversion and we're paying an extra $6 a month on our trash bill for a program that isn't doing what it claims. I get that new systems have rough starts, but writing checks for compost that ends up in a dump feels wrong. Is anyone else's town running curbside compost, and did yours have a rough first year too or did it work from the start?
