My town's recycling program quit taking glass 8 months back and I just found out where it's all going
Found out in June that the county curbside program stopped accepting glass entirely, and the guy at the transfer station told me to just toss it in the trash. I had been rinsing and sorting jars for 6 years thinking I was doing my part. Turns out the nearest place that actually processes glass is 140 miles away, so now I drive mine to a drop off in Iowa City once a month with my truck bed full. Feels stupid to burn gas hauling glass, but burying it forever feels worse. Anyone else dealing with a program that quietly cut glass or something else you were counting on?
Check if your county has a "glass only" dumpster at the transfer station before you keep making that drive, ours added one last year after enough people complained. Also worth bugging your city council rep about it, that's how the Iowa City drop off got started from what I heard. Saves you the gas money at least.
