My uncle told me to skip the smart thermostat and just turn the heat down at night

He said it was a waste of money and that I could just remember to do it myself. I live in Chicago and our winter heating bill was always huge, so last year I finally bought a basic programmable one for about $40. I set it to drop to 62 degrees when we're asleep and warm up before we wake up. The first month, our gas bill went down by almost $30. Over the whole winter, that saved us over $150. It was so simple, but I never would have done it without that push. Now I wonder what other easy fixes I'm missing. Has anyone else found a cheap gadget that actually cut their energy use?

Tell your uncle his advice is worth exactly what you paid for it. Classic case of someone being so sure they're right they never check the math. My dad said the same thing about LED bulbs until I showed him the receipt from the hardware store. Sometimes the old way is just the stubborn way.
