Serious question, did anyone else watch their city bus route get worse after they added bike lanes on 5th Ave?
I take the 14 bus in Portland every day and since they put in the protected bike lanes on 5th Ave last spring, my ride went from 22 minutes to 38 minutes. They cut two car lanes to fit the bikes, so now the bus just sits in a single lane with everyone else. I'm all for cutting emissions but if the bus gets slower, people just drive, so what did we actually fix here?
Wow, that sounds so frustrating, and it reminds me of when they redid the main street in my old neighborhood to add a roundabout. Everyone swore it would fix the traffic backups, but it just made the whole thing slower because drivers had no clue how to use it at first. My dad used to joke that the city planners must never actually drive through the areas they keep redesigning on paper. The weird part was that after about a year, things kind of evened out and it was fine, but nobody talks about that first year of pure chaos. It just seems like cities roll out these big changes without thinking about the buses that already work for tons of people. Makes you wonder who they're really building this stuff for, right?
