Shoutout to the guy at the Des Moines dump who showed me my old AC unit was 60% recoverable
I always figured a dead window unit was just trash, but he pulled the copper and compressor in like 10 minutes and told me most of it gets recycled. Now I'm wondering what else I've been tossing that wasn't actually garbage, anyone got a list of stuff you can actually recycle around here?
My grandpa hauled scrap for 30 years and swore the dump was a gold mine hiding in plain sight. He pulled motors out of old washing machines, cut cords off lamps, even saved the brass fittings off dead water heaters. Half his garage looked like a salvage yard but he probably made a few hundred bucks a month off stuff people just threw away. Next time you're out there ask the guy about scrap metal prices, it might change how you look at your junk pile.
