Talked to my grandpa about his old farm and it kinda wrecked me
He mentioned how they used to get frost in May where he grew up in Nebraska but now it's more like March, and said 'the ground just don't know when to sleep anymore.' Has anyone else had a older relative say something that made climate change feel way more personal?

...and what gets me is how your grandpa framed it like the ground itself was confused. "Doesn't know when to sleep anymore." That's different from just saying it's warmer. He's talking about a living thing that lost its rhythm. My uncle said something similar about the birds near his place in Missouri, how they start singing in January now and then go quiet when it snaps cold again. Like the natural world is stuck in a loop it can't get out of. That hits harder than any chart or number.

@the_blair your uncle noticing the birds is the same kind of thing my dad talks about with the maple trees on our farm. They've been tapping them for syrup for forty years, and he says the sap starts running a full two weeks earlier than when he was a kid. The trees just don't keep to the old schedule anymore. How do you even begin to explain to someone that the land itself has lost its calendar?
