TIL that a single cargo ship can put out as much pollution as 50 million cars and I found this out from a denmark group
So I was just scrolling around last week looking for stuff about shipping because my cousin works at the port in Long Beach and he keeps saying how wild it is there. I ended up on some site run by a group in Denmark and they had this number that honestly kind of floored me. One big container ship can give off the same junk as like 50 million cars. Fifty million. I had to read it twice because I thought it was a typo at first. And this was not some old article either, it was from a report they put out recently. I always figured cars were the main problem since we all see them every day, but I guess all the stuff we order online has to cross an ocean somehow. Now I can't stop thinking about every package I get. Does anybody here know if buying local actually cuts into this or is the ship leaving with or without my order no matter what?
Did you ever see the photos of the smoke pouring out of those ships? My brother in law ships stuff for a living and he told me one of those big ones burns through fuel so dirty it has to be treated almost like hazardous waste when they clean the tanks. I did the math after reading your post and one trip from China to California is like driving a car around the whole planet thousands of times. It kind of wrecked online shopping for me too, I keep staring at the tracking updates now wondering how much junk went into the air for a phone case. The local thing probably helps a little but you're right, the ship is going either way, so your box just rides along in the same smoke cloud.
