Caught myself laying out rebar in 90 degree heat without any gloves for 5 years

I was on a job site near Austin last Tuesday and this older foreman walks up and just stares at me for a solid 10 seconds. He points at my hands which are covered in little nicks and rust stains and says "you know that stuff will give you tetanus right?" I honestly thought rebar was just dirty steel, I never considered it had mill scale and all that crap from the factory. Turns out I should have been wearing cut-resistant gloves with good grip this whole time (especially when tying wire). He handed me a pair of his spare gloves and the difference in comfort and safety was immediate. I still can't believe nobody called me out on it sooner, I must have left tiny metal splinters in my hands after every pour. Has anyone else had a foreman just randomly save you from your own bad habits on site?

Man, those little metal splinters are no joke, learned that the hard way myself.

Yeah that's a pretty common thing honestly. People get set in their ways and nobody wants to be the guy telling someone else how to do their job. But it's funny how once you switch to the right gear you can't believe you ever did it the old way. Same thing with safety glasses or ear plugs, you think you're fine until you actually try them and realize how much better it is.
