Finally caved and bought a $150 laser level for a tricky tile layout, and it saved my entire weekend.
It let me snap perfect lines for a herringbone pattern in a weird L-shaped bathroom, something my chalk box and 4-foot level just couldn't handle accurately.

Agree completely, cheap tools just don't cut it for tricky layouts like that.
